THE WOMEN WHO CARRY LOVE FORWARD
A founder, grandmother and an ambitious personality on and off the court. A daughter who is raising the next generation with the same warmth and ambition she was raised with. And a four-year-old named Ellie, who's stepping onto the tennis court for the first time but already knows how to steal the show.
A STORY ABOUT MOTHERHOOD AND VALUES
This afternoon begins on a tennis court. With a daughter and a granddaughter who arrive carrying flowers as a small, spontaneous thank you for everything Helga has given them and continues to give. Ellie, four years old and fearless, is already gripping her racket. Tine is laughing. And Helga, co-founder of KAAI and grandmother, is exactly where she loves to be.
They played a small match and then sat down with a drink to talk about the thing that matters most to all three of them. Motherhood. What it takes, what it gives, and what quietly passes from one generation to the next.
WE ASKED THEM
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR TIME AS A MOM...
WHAT DID YOU MOST WANT TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN?
Helga: Above all, I want to be given love and a sense of security, because if you receive love when you are young, you will pass it on later in life, which also helps to build stability in your personality. Friendship is also something I consider very important – having people you can count on and who are reliable.
ARE THERE THINGS YOU'VE ONLY REALLY COME TO UNDERSTAND OR APPRECIATE LATER ON?
Tine: When it really comes down to being a mum, definitely yes, because that’s when I’ve only just started to realise how difficult it actually is – not just to bring up children, but to combine that with running the household, working... and keeping everything under control. I appreciate that much more now that I know it can’t have been easy for Mum with three children.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER ELLIE WILL CARRY WITH HER FROM YOU, PERHAPS WITHOUT EVEN REALISING IT?
Helga: I can already see the love and kindness I passed on to my daughter reflected in my granddaughter, and that’s heartwarming. Being dynamic, seeing me always on the go, being a go-getter, being ambitious... I can already see all that coming through in Ellie.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR DAUGHTER WILL SAY ABOUT YOU WHEN SHE'S OLDER?
Tine: Of course, I hope she’ll always love me and that we’ll always be best friends. But above all, I hope she can look up to me and, most importantly, see that I’ve always gone after my dreams and managed to balance that with running the household and looking after the children.
AS YOU SIT HERE TOGETHER LIKE THIS… WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR MIND?
Helga: Moments like these make me truly happy and remind me of the times when my daughter, as a baby in her Maxi-Cosi, used to stand by the tennis court. Just as we showed Ellie how to hold her racket a moment ago, I did the same with Tine. History repeats itself, and it’s lovely to see.
As the afternoon ended and Ellie ran out of energy, Helga looked at the two of them and said it best herself: "History repeats itself, and it's lovely to see."
That is what KAAI has always believed in. That the things worth passing on don't need to be said out loud. They live in the way you show up, the love you give and the life you build day after day, generation after generation.
This Mother's Day, we celebrate Helga, Tine and little Ellie. And every family that carries love forward.
