KAAI Stories

In conversation with Yolande

Some stories begin with a business plan. Hers began at the hairdresser's. For KAAI's eighth anniversary, we sat down with Yolande, a KAAIwoman from the very beginning, to talk about rewriting her path, slowing down on purpose and the dream she still carries with her.

Q: What's your story with KAAI?

Yolande: Ine and I went to the same hairdresser, and that's where she told me about her idea: a work bag designed for women. I loved it immediately. It was something the market was really missing.

I had searched for so long. Every time I thought I'd found a good bag, it would start sagging and tearing after a few months. So when KAAI came along, it felt like: finally, a work bag. I've had mine for four years now, I fill it to the brim, and it still hasn't changed shape. It still looks beautiful. Everything in one bag.

"Days fly by, weeks fly by. I think it's okay to slow down."

Q: What do you always carry in your bag?

Yolande: I always call it my bag in a bag. A little pouch with an extra perfume and an extra lipstick. With that, I know I'm good. I can get through the day, and through the evening.

Q: If your life were made up of chapters, what would you call this one?

Yolande: Every January, I set intentions for the year ahead. And this year, I consciously chose to slow down. Days fly by, weeks fly by. I think it's okay to pause.

Journaling has been part of my life for a few years now. How do you feel, and how can you learn to express it? Next to my bed, I keep a journal where I write one line every day. Putting my thoughts on paper first helps me find the words before I say them out loud.

"I decided to follow my gut. I didn't expect it. But it happens."

Q: What choice or moment set the course for your story?

Yolande: Mostly a professional one. Seven years ago, I started a company with a partner. You have your idea, your business plan, and you begin. You even imagine your children taking it over one day.

But after five years, a feeling started to grow: is this really what I want? I decided to follow my gut, and my gut told me it no longer felt right. My path was rewritten completely. I didn't expect it. But it happens.

Q: Is there a dream that keeps coming back to you?

Yolande: I've always dreamed of becoming an actress, though I never really pursued it. I used to imagine sitting on a terrace and someone walking up to say: I have a part for you.

And in a way, it happened. I ran into someone I knew in town, and he told me he was making a short film. I thought: wow, I've made it. The film was never released, but the dream stayed. I'd still love to be in a movie someday. Maybe it's time to go after it.
